A prayer from the Book of Common Worship, for your use before reading;

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Outline:

I. 1:1-2 Salutation: What is the author saying about Paul? And about Timothy?

II. 1:3-20 Preface: The defense of Truth: 

1:3-7 The Opposing Teachers: Timothy is to stay, because of inappropriate teaching by some. The term translated at “training” (v4) can also mean “plan”.  What is the purpose of teaching?

1:8-11 The Role of the Law: What does the author say the role of the law is? Why might he phrase it like this?

1:12-17 A Statement of Gratitude: Gratitude for what God has done for Paul. Verse 17 is language that could have come from Jewish congregational prayer.

1:18-20 The Charge to Timothy: Satan was thought to be the source of suffering and disease along with moral evil. Persons were “turned over” so that they might repent. We do not know anything else about the two men mentioned in verse 20.

What is the point of chapter one? What is the author establishing?

III. 2:1-6:19 Body of Letter: Now come the instructions mentioned in 1:18.

A.  2:1-3:16 Instructions for Congregations:

2:1-7 Prayers: Christians are to pray for everyone. Then the author explains why in a liturgical fragment.  “A quiet and peaceable life” expresses the ideal of good citizenship.

2:8-15 Gender defined Roles:  The author begins with instructions to men about prayer, and then goes on to the dress of women. “Concern that women dress and behave modestly was pervasive in the culture… The requirement that women be silent and submissive derives from Hellenistic household management traditions…. The prohibition against teaching derives from the author’s particular concern for approved teachers and correct teaching…. Indeed deception – of women and by opponents  emerges as a significant issue in the community (4:1; 2 Tim 3:5-7,13; Titus 1:10).” ( Bassler, 1139).
